Estate Planning: The Gift That Keeps On Giving

I often have clients whose estate planning documents (i.e. Wills, Powers of Attorney or Healthcare Powers of Attorney) are purchased as a gift by an adult child or other family member.

Estate planning truly is the gift that keeps on giving.

When you make sure a loved one has prepared for uncertainty, incapacitation or death, you are helping to ease that person's mind. When a loved one takes the steps to prepare for the same, they are removing that burden from their family and friends.

Estate planning offers mutual benefits to the planner and his or her family. It ensures that those troubling times of incapacitation or death are a little less stressful.

No one should have to argue about a loved one's last wishes during times of grief or sadness. Estate planning removes that burden from family and friends and grants the planner some agency in their end-of-life decision making.

It is important to know that even if you may have paid for the legal services, your loved one's attorney is bound by ethical rules to represent their client exclusively. This means the attorney will follow the wishes of your loved one - despite who paid the bill.
